Cork – Christmas Events Guide 2009

If you want to get into the festive spirit then a visit to Cork city is a must! With some cheap direct flights from cities like Dublin, Belfast, London, Manchester and lots more UK and European destinations, there really is no excuse for you not to come and visit for a while. The Christmas in Cork Festival is jammed packed with festive events this year so let’s take a closer look at what you can expect.

One of the highlights of the festive season in Cork each year is Cork On Ice. It takes place at the Marquee in the Cork Docklands (near Pairc Ui Chaoimh) and runs from the 13th December to the 17th January 2010. New to the ice rink this year is ice-curling – it’s similar to ‘bowls on ice’ but just lots more fun! Check out the Cork On Ice website for more.

The Christmas lights will be officially turned on at Bishop Lucey Park on the 29th of November. For the festival, Grand Parade will be transformed into a wonderful haven of Christmas markets and stalls while Bishop Lucey Park will be magically lit up and called the “Park of Dreams”. The park will be created by Peter Kelly from Brides of Franc, so it’s bound to be something spectacular!

‘A Christmas Celebration on Grand Parade’ will feature Christmas markets where everything from food to crafts can be purchased (it’s a great place to pick up a few stocking fillers!). There will also be plenty of entertainment in the form of carol singers and bands playing Christmas songs to get you in the festive mood. The Christmas Celebration on Grand Parade will take place on the Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays of each weekend in the run up to Christmas, beginning on November 27th.

Of course, Christmas would not be the same without Christmas Pantomimes! Cork has not one but two pantomimes taking place. Aladdin takes place at the Everyman Palace Cork from Saturday 5th of December to Sunday 10th January. However if you prefer ‘Jack And The Beanstalk’, head for the Cork Opera House where it’s showing from the 12th of December to the 10th of January.

‘Hunting for the Wren’ is a dying tradition in Ireland…well almost! In the little town of Carrigaline just south of Cork city, this age-old tradition is still alive and well. It takes place each year on St. Stephen’s Day and is a great family day out with a street carnival, traditional music and dance. For more on this festival visit the website of the Owenabue Valley Traditional Group.

3 Ways to Combine Work and Study in Singapore As a Foreigner

One way to finance your stay and study in Singapore is by combining study with work. As a foreigner, you need to obtain permission to be allowed to work in Singapore. Here are 3 ways to combine work and study in Singapore.

Option 1: Singapore’s work holiday program

If your main interest is to study short-term, the work holiday program offers most flexibility. The program allows you to apply for a 6-month pass with which you can freely apply for jobs in Singapore. There is no minimum earning requirement, so you can opt to work full- or part-time, and combine your work with study or sightseeing.

This program is administered by Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower. You can apply for the work holiday program if you are:

A full-time registered student in an approved institution, and resident in Australia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, the UK or UK, and between 17 and 30 years old

Option 2: Work as a Singapore-registered student

If you do not qualify for the work holiday program, or want to stay in Singapore for longer than 6 months, you can opt to register as a full-time student in an approved Singapore learning institutes. You will be allowed to work part-time during term time and full-time during school holidays.

Beware that the list of exempted institutions currently only consists of Singapore’s top tier Universities. Make sure to verify whether you are allowed to work before you enroll in a course – the requirements do change from time to time. Generally only graduating students are allowed to work.

At the bottom of this article, I will share links to the relevant institutions so that you can check updated information.

Option 3: Find a job in Singapore and let your company apply for you

If you are not planning to study full-time, there is one option: find full-time employment in Singapore. Singaporean companies can apply for permission to employ foreigners. Employment passes are subject to approval by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), who will look at your credentials. The most important requirement is the salary that you are going to earn. At the time of writing, the minimum salary to qualify for an S-Pass (the lowest tier) is S$ 1800 per month.

You will hear many discouraging comments about applying for a job in Singapore as a foreigner, but I know numerous people who have done it successfully, including myself.

Like in any country, you do have a certain disadvantage as a foreigner. If a company has several applicants for a job, and all except you are Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents, why do you think they will hire you? They will only do so if you are clearly better qualified than the local applicants. So this route is relatively easier to follow if you already have a few years of work experience, good qualifications and a clear profile.

Employment passes are typically issued for 2 years and they are tied to one employer, and once you are issued a pass, you can live in Singapore long term. And take up whatever course you would like.

Conclusion

If you plan to combine work and study in Singapore, there are several options to do so:

The working holiday program
Enroll as a student at a qualified institution and work part-time
Find a job in Singapore and study part-time

From the Beatles to Opera (the Beatles famously performed in Hamburg in 1960 for a total of 106 nights), the city is a major musical destination for city dwellers and visitors alike. Many come here as well for specific activities such as sports events, fairs and congresses.

Another very popular attraction is the Landungsbucken, the famous harbor promenade. There is also the Alster Arcades which is a colonnaded Victorian shopping area along the lake shore.

A recommended and very popular thing to do is a boat tour of the harbor and/or canals which will give a different view and perspective of the city. There is also the old warehouse district, the majestic Town Hall, the Art Hall Museum, and Hamburg’s famous zoo. Another poular spot is the relaxing neighborhood Schanze with open air

and beaches along the river Elbe.

Try taking a ride on the elevated U-Bahn from Rodingsmarkt to Landungsbucken for spectacular views of the massive port. And to get away from the city feel, try a short jaunt to Blankenese, a lovely picturesque former fishing village with tiny beaches, winding streets and comely houses.

Things to Do in Spokane: Ten of Our Favorites

Looking for things to do in Spokane? Have a thing for outdoor activities? Interested in arts and culture, events and festivals? Or just enthused over nature?

Then, the place to be is Spokane. Yes, a number of exciting challenges await you here. The list of things to do is rather long and it might be affected by the time of the year.

Here are 10 of our most favorite things to do in Spokane and the surrounding areas (within 30 miles).

Spokane Falls
River Front Park
The Davenport Hotel
Mobious Kid Museum
Spokane City Drive
Manito Park
The Spokane Fox Theater
Spokane Wineries
Green Bluff
Campbell House

Spokane is located in Northwestern United States in Washington State. As it is known today, it has become a bustling metropolis where nature and city life converge in an interesting harmony. The abundance of 76 lakes and at least 75 parks, plus wineries and ski resorts make it a haven for adventurers and travelers alike.

Hiking, mountain climbing, fishing, water rafting, sight-seeing, skiing and boating are some of outdoor activities that can be enjoyed. Walk, run or bike pass through the Spokane River Centennial Trail (starts at Idaho state line and ends at Nine Mile Falls, WA) and you’ll be amazed of pristine beauties of the Valley, Urban and Riverside State Park portions respectively.

An alternative option for cyclists is to follow the track along the area of a Victorian-era styled South Hill where the tracks are difficult to traverse making the ride even more exciting and challenging. Indoor activities are immensely popular as well.

The trendy and urban feel of Spokane’s culture embodies diverse performing arts scenes. Be it visual or musical (classical, jazz and world-class Broadway), the exposition to the arts is always housed at major theaters – the Civic Theater, the Opera House and of course, the Spokane Fox Theater.

But then again, we’ll focus on our top list.

First, what is visiting Spokane without witnessing the raging power of the Spokane Falls? Not only is it amazing to look at but it is also a source of hydroelectric power.

Second, the River Front Square is home to the century-old Looff Carrousel where riders can participate in an old-time ring toss; whoever grabs the brass ring gets a free ride. In here, a view of Spokane Falls can be seen from afar.

Next, the Davenport Hotel is both a must-see and a must-place to stay as this is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

How about treating the kids to Mobious Kid Museum? Well, that’s fourth on our list and it is such a delight to see kids (at least 10 years old) exposed to activities that inspire them to learn and grow. Halfway through the list is the City Drive with 26 sites and a course of 32 miles. Take a tour and drive when the sun is up.

Further, Manito Park and Botanical Gardens boasts of an avid versatility among parks with activities like baseball, tennis, duck feeding, and bird watching being the most usual. Manito Park is got to be one of our most favorite things to do in Spokane Washington. We take our in laws there everytime they are here.

Next, the Green Bluff can be visited any time of the year. But reserve it for the fall where the leaves are astounding and in the summer where the trails entice everyone to walk through them. Rounding up the top 10 is the historic Campbell House which is operated in partnership with the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture. There are many more things to do in Spokane if you look around (and if you search this website).

Truly, Spokane offers a unique blend of unparalleled experiences. Once you are here, you’ll always be in Spokane. Treat yourself and invite your family and friends to a visit and rightfully so, all of you will then be called “Children of the Sun.”

European Vacation – Tips to Have the Most Fun

I lived in Germany for five years, many moons ago, and as a result had the opportunity to travel around Europe quite a bit, visit lots of places, learn a little of three languages and have lots of fond memories. But since those golden days of yore I have been back twice with my fiancée for a three week trip and one 18 day’er.

The first was completely planned with reservations for each night and was high intensity, high stress covering six countries and nearly 1800 miles. How else can you cover all the bases? Actually you can’t and do it any justice at all.

And my friends that is lesson number one. For any trip to Europe lasting less than 3-4 months decide ahead of time and agree that you cannot see it all. There is so much not just the big cities but the countryside and small towns. That is where the heart of the country lies. You have to set priorities on what you want to see and stick to it. This requires quite a bit of advance planning on your part-or if you trust someone else a “Travel Agent”.

And that is lesson number two. Find a travel agent who you can trust-one who’s been there many times. Unless you have been to the country before you cannot possibly know all the nuances of foreign travel. Depending on your personality consider doing a tour first. Self guided trips to a foreign country can be very stressful and will perhaps ruin the trip

Lesson number three – Make an attempt to speak the local language. Even in France (with one exception) the locals appreciate you trying to speak the language. Depending on where you go for example most Beneulux countries, Austria, Switzerland, Germany and even northern Italy you can get by with German-and truth be told English if all else fails. But the locals really appreciate the effort and you will be rewarded for your efforts.

Lesson number four – Contrary to an international myth there are speed limits in Europe so watch the signs.

Lesson number five – Room sizes like bathrooms and bedrooms are without exception considerably smaller than what you are used to. So if you tend to be claustrophobic-beware. Also mealtimes are generally different from ours especially in Italy and France. The normal safety precautions should be taken for your room with a alarm door stop or keep one for added security. Thieves live in Europe too.

Lesson number six – For the really adventurous forget all of the above and just wing it. There is no better thrill in traveling, to my way of thinking, than being able to turn left off the autostrada to go to Venice just because you feel like it.

Traveling to Europe requires much planning and careful preparation. Having a good travel agent that has been to Europe many times is almost an absolute necessity for a self guided tour. If you are with a group you needn’t worry so much. But the most fun of all is doing it on your own without an itinerary.

Holiday & Travel Guide For Marrakech, Morocco

Sightseeing

Marrakech is a medieval town, with its historical Palace and Saadian Tombs. You will be amazed at the architecture of the building that houses the Museum of Marrakech, with its wonderful works of art displayed inside. Take a double decker bus tour around the city’s major sites, like the Koutoubia Mosque that was built in the 12 century with its beautiful gardens. Unfortunately there is no access to the mosque for non Muslims. Marrakech is a busy and vibrant place, full of colour and sounds. It can be quite hectic so if you want to get away from it for a while take an excursion out to the wonderful Ouzoud Waterfall where you will meet plenty of local monkeys. While relaxing with a drink in the outdoor restaurant, it is a great place for photo opportunities or even to take a camel ride into the desert and spend a night camping out under the Moroccan stars. There are many smaller towns close by that will fill your days with some wonderful sights if you want to explore this charming country. An afternoon in the Square of the Dead is delightful, with snake charmers, musicians and story tellers to entertain all the family. Before you leave Marrakech, fly over the city in a hot air balloon, it’s a wonderful experience and very memorable with some fantastic views and plenty of photo opportunities.

Beaches

Marrakech isn’t a beach resort, but if you want to relax away from the bustling town then the harbour town of Essaouira is the nearest beach to Marrakech, where you can experience some great water sports like kite sailing and windsurfing along its broad sandy beach. It can be a little windy, but when the sun is at its hottest a little breeze is more than welcome, you can also try some horse riding along this very clean beach.

Shopping

Shopping in Marrakech is an exciting experience, haggle with the locals in the large open air Bazaars selling everything from Souvenirs to gorgeous handmade rugs, leather and hand crafted gold jewellery. Take in the sights and sounds of this hectic bustling place, if you don’t intend to buy don’t haggle as the locals can become quite aggressive over it, but if you do haggle you’ll be sure to pick up a bargain or two. If you prefer fixed price shopping with less hustle and bustle then you will find some very nice fixed price shops in the town.

Eating

Moroccan food is very tasty and quite diverse with Arabic, Mediterranean and African influences. Many spices are used in the traditional dishes; these can be found in many authentic restaurants, the most popular dish being pigeon pie. Many authentic dishes are cooked with couscous rice, spicy meat and delicious vegetables. You will find the smaller more busy restaurants serving the locals tend to be the better places for traditional cuisine, but there are plenty of restaurants that sell international foods and fast food outlets selling baguettes filled with salad and meat can be found all around the towns. All of the hotels cater for the tourist market.
